Ever since the installation of the communist dictatorship, its opponents had been demanding free elections. There were no free elections in the GDR and no competition between political parties. The “leading role” of the Socialist Unity Party (SED) was anchored in the constitution. All the candidates for the government and parliament were placed on a single list. Actual voting consisted solely of approving or rejecting this list as a whole. According to official statistics, around 99 percent of voters generally opted for the candidates on the list. Although the politicians on the “united list”, as it was called, were actually elected by an overwhelming majority, many people suspected electoral fraud.
Kommunalwahlen 1989
Oppositionelle wollen das bei den Kommunalwahlen am 7. Mai 1989 belegen und die Auszählung der Stimmen kontrollieren. Wochenlang bereiten sie sich auf diese Aufgabe vor. Die Stimmauszählung kann durch Stichproben überprüft werden. Der Vergleich mit dem amtlichen Endergebnis zeigt, dass staatliche Behörden die Auszählung manipuliert haben. Die offiziell verkündeten Wahlergebnisse sind gefälscht. Wahlen als Kernstück der Demokratie sind in der DDR nur Fassade.
